New theaters and performance venues, University Arts Centers
College of the Holy Cross PAC
2014
H3’s design of the Performing Arts Center at the College of the Holy Cross advances Holy Cross’ mission to “create an environment in which integrated learning is a shared responsibility, pursued in classroom and laboratory, studio and theater, residence and chapel.” Holy Cross’ mission along with the cultural and physical context of the campus will inform the architecture, creating an identity of place and experience unique to Holy Cross. The building will become a new cultural landmark in the region, providing not just great performances, but also education, inspiration and connectivity to the entire Holy Cross community.
The campus architecture at Holy Cross evokes the tradition and distinction of the school’s heritage. Any new building must recognize and complement this language of architecture. Placing the new facility on the existing parking lot adjacent to Hogan Campus Center provides a unique opportunity to speak to both tradition and innovation.
The North Facade of the new building will be oriented to dramatic views towards the city of Worcester. This facade will respond to the existing masonry context while providing a scale of architecture appropriate to the pedestrian activities that surround. This facade will bring students into the performing arts center through a series of plazas located between the existing residence halls.
The South Facade of the new building will open toward the existing parking lot toward the Hart Recreation Center. This will be the “Public” face welcoming visitors through a dynamic screened facade evoking the creative spirit and minds working inside. The screen will also provide needed sun protection to the glass facade illuminating the exciting activities within.
