K-12 School, Palm Beach County
2023
The client obtained a defunct charter school facility in Delray Beach not far from Everglades State Park. To meet the rising demand for private school education in Palm Beach County, H3 developed an alterations plan for the existing building to convert it into a Lower School and developed a site plan configuration to expand the school to a K-12 academic campus.
As the existing school was formed with tilt-up concrete panels, our proposal sheathes the exterior façade with aluminum screen elements offset from the exterior surface to provide shade, color and depth. New window enframements align with the existing window bays and organize the façade into a series of monumental openings. A sinuous canopy shelters students along the dropoff and pickup areas while the cornice echoes this curved line against the sky.
A future Upper School, STEM Building and Sports and Recreation Building will complete the campus, along with expanded playfield areas and a showcase children’s playground. New specimen tree planting throughout the site will increase shade coverage and improvements to the adjoining Lyons Road greenway will provide connections to the County’s open space network.
