H3’s staff provided site evaluation and development options in association with a study being conducted regarding the new School of Social Work at Columbia University. The intent was to assist the University in addressing concerns that had been raised by the community regarding the height and non-residential use of the proposed School of Social Work at its intended mid-block location.
As part of the scope of work, our firm prepared diagrams and massing studies illustrating how the desired programs, which range from classrooms, offices, and lounges to housing, can be accommodated on each of eleven sites. A preliminary estimate of construction costs was also provided.
Based on an evaluation of the benefits and limitations of each site for accommodating the various proposed programs and the potential impact of development on the surrounding community, several options were refined and presented to the public.
