H3 served as the interior designer for the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, located on the lower level of Westbeth Artist Housing in Greenwich Village. It is the oldest continuously operating school of dance in America and is a charter member of the national Association of Schools of Dance.
The project included creating a new facility with three dance studios, a reception area, faculty offices, lounges for both administration and dance students, as well as men’s and women’s restrooms.
Within the dance studios, the design consisted of a specialized wooden flooring with a solid maple hardwood surface and red-oak dance bars. Cork-covered V-shaped walls divide the space and provide a signature architectural element. A frosted-glass and aluminum overhead door acts as a moveable barrier between the studio and lounge space. The public entry features an end-grain wood floor and stair, with a birch fin-ply paneled reception desk.
