Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts

2021

H3 was engaged by the City of Greensboro and Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro to lead a highly-compressed, public interactive process to develop concepts for a new 3000 seat theater, determine the best location in which to site the theater and to refine a capital cost estimate for a new performing arts center.  The design team’s challenge was to create a performance hall capable of presenting symphony performances, lectures, rock and pop music concerts, children’s programming and touring Broadway shows.

The optimal site turned out to be one not owned by the city. However, the site scored so high on all other measures that the city decided to pursue site acquisition to assemble the properties, finally providing the Tanger Center with the land for a permanent new home. H3’s design for a 3,000 seat, 105,000 SF fully flexible arts center was successfully approved by the city and the firm was brought on to lead the design of the project.

The $90M facility incorporates the latest technologies and acoustical and staging flexibility, allowing the venue to serve as a concert hall for symphony performances and opera as well as an auditorium for spoken word events and as a road house for touring shows from rock to Broadway scale productions. Instead of building two completely separate venues customized to the program, the new hall’s technological flexibility provides a changeable and optimum environment for multiple types of performances without compromising the integrity of any of them.  H3’s carefully considered design has exceeded expectations in terms of meeting the goals set forth for the design and construction of the building.
