Valdosta State University’s new Performing Arts Center, designed by H3 in collaboration with Savannah-based Cogdell & Mendrala Architects, marks a transformative investment for the university’s College of the Arts. Rising on the site of the former Ashley Street Cinemas on VSU’s north campus, the 43,000-square-foot facility broke ground in October 2024.

Architecturally, the contemporary design echoes the traditional character of VSU’s historic main campus, featuring a grand entrance and a spectacular interior lobby that welcomes audiences into the venue. The centerpiece is a 375-seat proscenium theater outfitted with a second-floor mezzanine, fly loft, wings, and orchestra pit, complemented by a flexible black box lab theater for experimental works. Supporting spaces include rehearsal rooms, scene and costume shops, dressing rooms, classrooms, and faculty offices.

The center will host VSU’s Theatre and Dance programs, the Peach State Summer Theatre, student recitals, faculty productions, guest artists, touring performances, and community events. By replacing outdated 1969-era facilities, it directly supports the university’s Strategic Plan, strengthens arts instruction, and positions VSU as a cultural beacon for the South Georgia region.
