Restoration and Adaptive Reuse

21 projects

If you restored the New Amsterdam Theatre exactly as it opened in 1903 — gas lamps calibrated to eyes that had never known electricity — a modern audience couldn't see the stage. That is just one of the questions: the New Amsterdam also housed the Ziegfeld Follies through the 1920s and received an Art Deco marquee in 1937, each period authentic in its moment and an erasure of something earlier. H3's answer has been consistent: honest preservation can only interpret, never replicate. Restoration relationships at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center, and the New Victory and Joyce Theaters have produced a firm that understands not just how to restore buildings, but how to steward them through multiple rounds of change.
